Home>Choosing A Site Topic Finding A Site Topic To Build A Home Internet Business
Before you can build a home internet business you first need to find a topic or theme that the site will be about. Just any old topic won't do because we want to have fun building the site and make money from it too. So we need to find a theme that you really like or are very interested in and one that has the potential to make you money.
Your Hobbies And Interests
If you haven't already done so I recommend you download and read the free affiliate masters ebook. It shows you in a step by step way how to go about finding your site niche. This will be your guide from finding a topic idea to building your finished site.
After the introduction, this ebook gets into methods for finding your site theme or topic. Dr. Ken Evoy, the author, recommends making a list of all your hobbies and interests. Don't restrict yourself at this point just make a list of all your hobbies you enjoy doing and other things you are very interested in. Then you will be ready for the next step where you start narrowing down your list to some profitable topics.
Keyword Research
Keywords, if you don't already know, are words and phrases you type into a search engine to find information you are looking for. Still following the affiliate masters ebook guide the next step is using keyword research to develop a site topic from your list of interests.
SearchIt is a free tool offered by Site Build It that puts a lot of helpful things in one place. You will find it very useful and convenient once you get the hang of using it.
The keyword research on each of your site ideas will give a very good idea which topics are profitable to build a site for. Not all will have income potential. Some topics will be too big, some too small, some will have way too many competing sites already. You will discover this first before spending time building a site that won't make money. This will involve some time and work on your part but its the foundation for a site that can make you money for years to come.
Does Your Topic Have Income Potential?
Your goal here is to make money with a site topic you have great interest in or knowledge about. But in order to get a lot of free search engine traffic you need a topic that has a limited amount of competition. The more sites based around that theme the harder it will be for you to get a substantial share of that search traffic.
So how do you decide if your topic will be profitable?
The keyword research will show you the number of competing sites for the main concept keyword and for each keyword phrase under it. For example lets say your concept keyword phrase is "dog art" and the demand or number of searches for that phrase is say 50,000/month on overture. You check the supply of related or competing sites by searching in Google the phrase in quotes "dog art".
How many competing sites does it return? If its say 10 million then this is probably not a good topic to build a site for. If its only 10,000 though then it may be worth building a site around. You still need to look at the demand versus supply numbers for the rest of the keywords also.
A few tools make it easy to compare demand and supply of keywords and give you a good idea of their profitability. They do this using a formula which gives a number called KEI or "keyword effectiveness index" for each phrase. That formula and kei value varies with which tool you are using.
